Pearl Jam Show Notes 7/13/2024:

The President of Portugal is in attendance for this, the last show of the European leg. It’s a late show, starting after 11 pm local time. There are steps down an extension of the stage out into the crowd, which Ed makes full use of. They open with a short Daughter, no tag, just Ed and the crowd doing the “whoa-oh” chant, and they kick right into Dark Matter, its earliest appearance in a setlist yet. No Scared of Fear tonight, React, Respond is next, followed by the long-awaited 2024 debut of Animal. During Small Town, Ed says “…it’s yours if you want it,” and lets the crowd take the vocal, motioning back to Matt to keep it going, saying “…one more, you got it!” and he joins the crowd, harmonizing at the end. He apologizes for his Portuguese, saying that it’s a hard language. Some birthday messages are shown on the screen during Wishlist, including to Tiago (possibly Tiago Pires, a well-known Portuguese surfer), and a message to Pedro, who had requested Off He Goes, with the message “Next time.” Mike shines on Waiting for Stevie, and then plays most of the Even Flow solo behind his head, with the visuals behind cascading upwards an infinite amount of Pearl Jams, and goes out on the front ramp above the crowd at the end. Ed comes out after the break and talks about how Boom’s ancestors were from Portugal and went to Hawaii by boat back in the 19th century. He plays Imagine solo, with the crowd showing their fireflies and singing along. During the Black solo, Ed walks out front and conducts the crowd, tapping his arms against his heart to the rhythm of the crowd’s clapping, and getting on his knees and doing the “we’re not worthy” motion to each side as the song ends. He gets to crowd to clap along to Mike’s Ledbetter outro, and leaves with “Thank you…goodnight. We’re very blessed.” Indifference, Not For You, and Baba O’Riley are all cut from the encore setlist.

I was obsessed with Pearl Jam in the early 90's, and then became a collector of their live bootlegs in the 2000's. I’ve seen them 12 times in 8 different states. I’m continuously blown away by their ability to create transcendent moments in concert. I owe them for my love of vinyl, live music, and so much more. I’m happy to have the podcast and this website as an outlet for that obsession.
