Lukin opens for the second time this year, just like at Bottlerock. In fact, the first 11 songs are exactly the same as what was played at that festival back in May. Ed leads a energetic call and response during Corduroy. Before Small Town, Ed has a sheet of paper, he starts to speak in Spanish but then switches to English:

“…Welcome to a show about friends…we are all friends, you are all friends, we are friends…”

He continues in Spanish, talking about what a beautiful night it is and how magnificent the country is. Mike is pogoing throughout the beginning of React, Respond and shreds the solo, his sparkly jacket that he started the show with removed. Jeff starts the actual W.M.A. bassline as soon as Ed starts singing the Daughter tag. Ed speaks in Spanish again, a running theme throughout the show of “Y tambien…mi gran gran amigo…” (And also….my great great friend) talking about a different band member each time, Matt before Dark Matter, and Mike before Even Flow. Unthought Known makes its 2024 debut. Ed sees an issue in the crowd before Black but it’s evidently taken care of quickly. Big singalongs all night long, the crowd is loud on Black especially. Mike’s Black solo is again showstopping, this song is on an incredible run right now. Ed walks up behind him and gives him a big hug from behind as the solo ends. Prior to Porch, Ed talks about the first time they played there, at Club Revolver. He talks about his two brothers, Jason and Michael, back home in California; their birthdays were yesterday and today, one of them is 50 and he jokes that he doesn’t know how old the other one is. He asks for someone to record and has the crowd sing Happy Birthday to them. Mike starts off the Porch jam slow, almost psychedelic, but then ramps it up quickly as Ed dances beside him. Speaking of Ed, he runs way out in the middle of the T barricade during the jam, getting an up close look at the crowd. He stays down there as he comes back in vocally, urging the crowd for more. Black, Running, and Porch also closed out the Bottlerock main set. It’s all crowd favorites in the encore, starting with Better Man. Ed asks for the crowd to sing extra loud, and they oblige. He’s running all along the side stages and dancing during Alive, the band’s in a great mood all night and energy is high. As Stone is soloing during Rockin’ in the Free World, Jeff motions to Mike to switch instruments and they do, Mike taking the bass and Jeff strumming on guitar. Before Ledbetter, Ed takes a moment to shout out Motxila 21, a Spanish music group made up of people with Down’s Syndrome, saying “they are amazing people…we are proud to be on the same stage as all those incredible people…remember that we are friends.”

Oceans opens night two in Barcelona, a touching nod to the 2018 show, where it was dedicated to a fan named Israel who had passed away. Off He Goes is upbeat and jangly, the crowd clapping along. The Daughter tag is a Public Image Ltd. song called “Rise” (“May the road rise with you/anger is an energy”). 1/2 Full has a unique visual, as the artist Rob Sheridan explained on Instagram (@rob_sheridan):

“I brought a photo to life that [Jeff} had taken at Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia the day before, giving it surreal movement that gradually melts into abstract forms inspired by Gaudi and Dali…as my video dissolved into a haze towards the end of the song [Eddie] took over on some visuals of his own, using his guitar to reflect a beam of light out onto the crowd. It was only noon yesterday when Jeff threw out the idea of using his photo to bring some of the city’s own inspiring texture into the show, and by that evening we had created all this from it.”

Ed sees a fan in the audience who has a sign asking to come on stage and play guitar, and tells a story about a dream he had where he was surfing and the fan and his sign appeared in the dream, exclaiming “I dreamed about you!” He continues, teasing that the fan has to play hard to get now. Mike starts the Even Flow solo with his teeth and then goes down front, letting the front row help out. As the solo finishes, the crowd starts a “whoa, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh” chant and Ed picks up on it, interjecting “…you’re in the band, man!” The crowd continues the chant after the song and Ed joins in with a short improv. Immortality is stellar as always. Who Ever Said returns for the first time this year, a rare Gigaton appearance. Ed does a new intro to Corduroy, strummed with lots of harmonics. Waiting For Stevie returns as well for the first time in Europe. During Something Special, there’s what looks like a serious medical issue in the audience, and the song is stopped for a few minutes while the person is attended to At one point Ed asks if everything is okay and the crowd response is a resounding “no.” It was very hot in the venue as well, perhaps a contributing factor. During a fantastic RVM, everyone drops out and it’s just the crowd propelling the song with their clapping until Jeff comes back in for the finish. After the break, the entire band comes back out for Smile, with dedications shown on the screen in Ed’s calligraphy. After the dedications conclude, the last slide reads:

Dear

Barcelona,

WE

FUCKING

LOVE YOU!

Ed adds “…ain’t that the truth!” at the end for good measure. Before Black, Ed says “…every face that we can see here, it’s just like an incredible face with an incredible emotion…what have we done in our lives to deserve this, I don’t know…real fucking people, man, real emotion, real faces…you know, I meet people in the street, but they’re not as cool as you, just saying…” Black is once again an outpouring of emotion and intensity, Mike jabbing the headstock of his guitar against his amp and falling to his knees. Openers The Murder Capital join on stage for Rockin’ in the Free World, and the fan from earlier is brought up for Ledbetter, he and Mike work it out and then he plays guitar during the song! Ed thanks the crowd for “this beautiful energy….thank you for directing it our way.”

Show Notes:

After having to cancel the last 3 shows (night 2 in Manchester and both Berlin shows), PJ returns to the stage in Barcelona. Footsteps opens in the dark, only Jeff is seated, Ed showing none of the ill effects that forced the cancellations. The crowd is loud and helps out on Nothingman. Mike is stalking the stage during the build in Present Tense and Ed goes down on the front riser and plays to the rail. Ed speaks in Spanish, reading from a paper. Given to Fly sees the lyric change “…made it to Barcelona…” Ed steps away from the mic at the end of Small Town, letting the crowd take the vocal, then adding “one more, show us what you got!” Mike shreds on Scared of Fear, again thrashing around at the end. Ed introduces React, Respond in Spanish. Prior to Wreckage, he speaks in Spanish again, talking about how the songs on Ten only had one word, and this one on the new record does too. After Even Flow, Ed leads a chant, shouting out Mike, and then talks about how Jeff and Stone have been brothers for 40 years. He praises the crowd, calling them the most energetic they’ve had on the tour so far. In My Tree is dedicated to a woman named Celia, “it’s her favorite.” Mike goes down front for the Dark Matter solo. Ed conducts the crowd during Jeremy, pogoing and building them up for a deafening singalong at the end. He’s holding a guitar and says “not sure if you’ll know this one…” and plays Name that Tune, hitting the first note, asking “any idea? This is about having something that you wanted for a while, and then once you had it, you couldn’t get rid of it, and if you don’t get rid of it, you’ll fuckin’ die,” leading into a downtuned Habit. Ed once again is speaking Spanish before Upper Hand, reading from his paper. He asks “…am I saying that right?” and then speaks English, joking that after 4 years, once they move here in December, he’ll be more fluent. He does a short Spanish guitar “Romanza” intro to Better Man on the electric guitar, the first time it’s been played since 2005! After the break, Ed comes out solo and gets the various parts of the crowd to make noise, competing with each other. He says “…we had days off we didn’t want to have off, to come out of it and land in this kind of ocean with great people and a great wave, thank you.” The band returns for Wasted Reprise, Boom starts the chords and Ed speaks, taking a moment to collect his thoughts:

“Last week, it almost felt like a near-death experience, it was very uncomfortable and it got frightening, it was a chest, front cavity…it felt like maybe you couldn’t breathe and you might not make it through the night, like you might have to go to the hospital…you just realized how precious this life is, how lucky we are to have been living on a planet where we can go around and play to incredible people like the people in this room here tonight, so it was a poignant experience, I won’t be forgetting it anytime soon, and we won’t be forgetting tonight anytime soon…”

It’s the first Wasted Reprise since 2021, and followed by the first Life Wasted since 2022. Ed’s running around and being interactive with the crowd during Alive, Jeff goes over to Stone’s side and plays for a while before he and Stone gather around Matt for the end. Mike immediately kicks into Baba O’Riley and the celebration is on. Ed leaves with “…there’s no words to say thanks as much as we feel, but I’ll try…I’ll just bow to you, thank you…” and leads the crowd in an “olé” chant before exiting.

Release builds up very nicely to open. Ed starts a brief callback with the seeming intention of throwing the crowd off guard before rushing into Lukin. Corduroy includes the extra solo from Mike during the new breakdown section. After Why Go, and perhaps referencing the organizational chaos marking the festival’s first day, Ed’s greeting to the crowd in Spanish relates a conversation about the amount of people in attendance: “A friend told me… ‘No, you don’t understand, the people in Madrid are insane’ and I adore insanity, so here’s a big hug to all my crazy friends.” Ed speaks in Spanish again before Even Flow, recalling how Mike first played the song in Madrid 26 years earlier to a few hundred people: “He played amazing that night, but wait ‘til you see him play now.” Can’t Deny Me is introduced with a dedication to “all the strong women in the audience who will change the world” and a PSA video featuring actors Luis Tosar and Javier Bardem reminding the men in the audience that “no means no,” eliciting rousing applause: feminism and violence against women are especially prominent issues in Spain at the moment. Ed wraps up Wasted Reprise by adding “Enjoy your last breaths, old men, of racism and sexism, you fuckers are going to die and it’ll die with you.” Better Man gets the slightly extended version of the Save it for Later tag. Mike, Stone, and Jeff spend the breakdown of Porch in a three-person guitar circle while Ed steps down to the ground and walks down a corridor stretching into the VIP area closest to the stage to mingle with the crowd (hugs and even a kiss included). Just Breathe intro is interrupted by someone from the crowd’s expression of affection, and Ed responds “You’re very nice… I love you, too” before going on to describe the song as about “the big love…as big as the oceans…as big as the Spanish summer sky, as big as the crowd at the Mad Cool Festival” and invites the crowd to illustrate how big they are by lifting the lights of their phones to be projected on the stage screens, and finally dedicates the song to Bardem and Penélope Cruz. Ed precedes the “We Belong Together” tag on Black with “Lo siento” (I’m sorry), and heads back to the crowd during “State of Love and Trust” for help singing. Possibly pressed for time (a few more bands are still scheduled), and after one more hug for Ed with the crowd, Matt signals a somewhat abrupt end to Alive, and the band immediately transitions into Rockin’ in the Free World to end the set, skipping the second verse, but not without a timely lyrical adaptation (“there’s a million points of light for the immigrant man, open our hearts while we can”) to bring the night to an end.

Early appearances of Elderly Woman and Corduroy get the crowd going early, huge singalongs. Mike takes two long and melodic solos during Corduroy. Ed greets the audience with a “Salud salud” and “Hola Barcelona,” trying hard to incorporate a Barcelona accent, and draws some wild applause when he references the ongoing World Cup. Ghost makes its only appearance of 2018, and the band sounds incredibly tight on it. A member of the crowd yells out “You’re killing it Mike” before Nothing as it Seems. After Setting Forth, Matt starts the beat of Not For You, and Jeff begins jamming a little bit, as if he is about to join in, but with a quick turnaround, the band goes straight into Given to Fly. Even Flow is introduced as “Tiny penis orange man.” Leading up to the show, there was a concerted fan-led effort to get the band to acknowledge a fan, Israel, who had recently passed. Ed comments after Even Flow:

“You know, someone who couldn’t be here this week to see these shows. You know sometimes you lose…there’s a bit of a family, you know there’s lots of people who have listened to us long enough to where they’ve met at shows and then gotten married and had kids and brought kids to shows and there’s a bit of a community and so when you get news that you lost one of your, the folks in your community, it’s nice to see everyone come together and support each other and the loved ones of that person and as a band we’d like to participate in supporting that person and that family and their memory and so we’d like to…it’s very powerful, it’s probably one of the most important byproducts of being in a group that we had no idea would ever happen, we’re just happy to be here together but we’re here together. And so this one, I thought it would be nice if we just take this room and light it up for a young man named Israel who should have been here tonight. He went into some surgery that he should have come out of, and there were some complications, and, um, the news was sad so what we’d really like to do is come together for him tonight. This is for brother Izz and his friends and his family.”

This leads into Israel’s favorite song, Oceans, and they keep the  tribute going by following it up with Light Years..

The “It’s Ok” tag in Daughter is replaced with “Esta Bien,” and the Spanish crowd gladly obliges. An audience member has a Gord Downie shirt that Ed mentions on mic and asks the cameras to show it. He says that he lost a friend recently, and that this next one is for his friend Ken. The band launches into Come Back, an incredible version with a lot of space, great vocals and some very emotional guitar work. Wasted Reprise goes straight into Better Man, with Ed adding some extra lyrics to Save it for Later. Mike starts Yellow Ledbetter, but Ed abruptly stops him to say:

“Whoa whoa whoa, I’m sorry…I had to tell you, I’m looking for a young boy named Miguel because I want to give him his first glass of wine. I got this letter, it says Dear Eddie, oh and it had a great drawing on it too, I think they might show it ‘there’ [points to video screen], its a great drawing of us playing live…there’s Matt and Jeff and Stone and Mike and me and he’s right in the front so he should be…that’s not Miguel is it…that’s right in the spot, you’re right in the spot. You make sure this gets to him, yeah? So it says ‘Dear Ed, my name is Miguel. I’m 9 yrs old, I’m a big fan of yours. I’d like to meet you tomorrow. Tomorrow is a great day for me because I’ll see you live. I’ve waited a long time for this moment.’ [laughs] Well I’ll tell you what Miguel, after tonight, it won’t be another 12 years before we’re back in Barcelona. We’re very…and lastly he says…’I would be very grateful, if you play tomorrow at the concert, Yellow Ledbetter.’ So it’s our pleasure Miguel, this is for you my friend.”

Yellow Ledbetter ends the night, the crowd bids farewell to the band with a soccer cheer, and Ed steps back up to the mic and says “We truly truly love this city, and as people here tonight we thank you so much, we really can’t wait to come back….I will keep it with me I promise.”
