Bridge School Series: #5 – October 20, 1996

Hi Patrons! Sorry this took a little bit longer to go out this week as we mentioned in the weekly episode that it would be out on Thursday, but with the recent events happening in the US we were a little bit distracted and figured it was more important to focus on those events rather than ones of our own. But we promised one episode a month and we snuck it in 4 (EST) hours before we hit June so at least we hit our quota. If you checked out our last Bridge School episode, it was the 1996 night 1 show featuring the alternate Corduroy and great versions of Off He Goes and Sometimes. The night 2 setlist is much of the same, but with one huge topic that has basically been a long-form talking point since this show started. We get the first bluesy (ahem, “riffy”) intro of Porch. We’ll talk about how its origins tie in with something The Who used to do and why it might’ve stuck around in latter years of the band’s performances. We’ll also spend time on the hand written setlist which curiously looks like a certain font that was printed on the newest album.

Enjoy the show!

Setlist Draft May 2020

It’s that time again! Every month we get a couple of patrons together to do a little project we like to call a setlist draft. The rules will pretty much be explained in the episode, but the objective is to draft songs in order of how you want your set to flow. Outside of Gigaton, once the song is taken, it’s off the board. Host Randy took the crown for April by the slimmest of margins and was challenged by three brand new competitors. Debra McMurtrey, a past guest of the show known for her journals of personal band stats, Brian Anderson a first timer and patron and Joey Goodsir who was featured on our Gigaton panel. Check out the show to see who you thought drafted the best setlist!

Exclusive Episode: Vienna, Austria – 6/19/1992

On last week’s episode we promised that we’d be covering the band’s first performance in Austria from 1992, but since Binaural’s anniversary came up, we gave Prague 2000 a go on the regular platforms. But we kept our promise and decided to record this episode too! It’s an early show, 14 song set on the night after a popular Zurich show. We have the Mamasan played in full for its third time and some killer early versions of songs. Check it out. Keep staying safe, hopefully we are good company during this pandemic. Next week we’ll have our next set list draft episode and soon after we’ll release the second Bridge School show from 96. Thanks everyone for making this happen. It doesn’t without you.

Devo Series: “Creating Pearl Jam’s Rock Band Songs”

Back in the late 2000’s, one of the biggest crazes in the video game world were the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games. You may not have known this, but at the tail end of the game’s popularity they were set to release a Pearl Jam version of Rock Band in the same way they did one for The Beatles, Aerosmith, Metallica, etc. Since interest in the game died down, the idea was shelved and never came to fruition. In this little experiment, we try to create what our own personal game’s set list would look like and how to tell the story of Pearl Jam throughout it. Also! For those of you who liked the Berlin episode, we have lots of extra clips that were left off that we feature at the end of this show. Enjoy it all!

Bridge School Series: #4 – October 19, 1996

We’re back with our fourth installment of the Bridge School shows and while we talked about a lot of interesting songs and topics in the first three, this show may be the best of the bunch. The conversation here is rightfully dominated by the alternate version of Corduroy as it is the moment everyone remembers fondly from this show. How they took such a prominent arena song and were able to make changes to it – chances that almost no other band would take on one of their most popular songs. Along with Corduroy we get outstanding versions of Off He Goes, Sometimes, Daughter with a Song X tag and Brendan O’Brien joining the band on keys for all of it. Enjoy the episode, let us know what you think of this alternate version of Corduroy and we’ll share it on the Night 2 episode next month!

Setlist Draft April 2020: Gigaton Edition

We’re back with this month’s edition of our Set List draft series. Last time we drafted, it was prior to the release of Gigaton so we only had Dance, Superblood and River Cross to choose from. Now we have a full album arsenal of songs to use and we’ve changed up the game a little bit. The rules are as follows – Gigaton songs are available to be drafted by anyone and you must have a minimum of 7 songs from the album in your set and a max of 9. Alive is still a communal song, but we no longer have Black or the wildcard pick available to all of our contestants. There is still a minimum of one song per album that must be drafted, but you can only pick a max of 4 songs from any non-Gigaton album. Here are the four competitors this week: Our returning champion Chris Everett is back to defend his title. since John lost in March, Randy has returned to compete. And competing for the first time are livefootsteps.org founder Dave JanTausch and long-time patron Bradley Piasecki.

Evolution Series: #8 “In My Tree”

The newest installment in our Evolution Series features popular No Code track In My Tree. We’ll break down the song’s early stages with Jack Irons’ presence on drums and how the song transitioned when Matt Cameron took over. In 2003, after almost being forgotten, the song would go through a major change live, beginning in Fargo, North Dakota of all places, leading to an unforgettable performance at the Live At The Garden show. We break down some of the best versions of the song and talk about the influence of the drummers, and why this seldom-played No Code song has become such a favorite for fans over the years. Enjoy!

Exclusive Episode: Helsinki, FIN – 6/10/1993

As we wind our way through Europe in our Around the World series, we felt like we had to cover this little show, the only time the band has ever played in Finland. Opening up a run of shows for Neil Young and on the verge of the ill-fated U2 opening slot, we find the band seemingly running on fumes, the nonstop turning of the gears perhaps finally getting to them. Ed’s voice is not in great shape as well…would they be able to muster up a memorable performance? Early versions of Animal, Glorified G, and Daughter make an appearance, as well as some new Porch tags. Nauttia!

Bridge School Series: #3 – October 2, 1994

We’ve reached our third installment of our Bridge School Series finishing up the classic two night stay from 1994. This preview for Vitalogy with Jack getting his second tryout with the band features early and eclectic versions of the new tracks.

Not For You is played in a way that it’s never been done before and Immortality is shared for the first time since the famous Orpheum show including brand new lyrics that we are used to today. This 7-song set also features the first stage rendition of Bee Girl in the encore following night 1’s lead of using an unplayed deep cut when they did Let Me Sleep.

And of course you get all of the expected Bridge songs – Black, Elderly Woman and Daughter. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Setlist Draft March 2020

Round 2! We’re back with our second set list draft as John defends his championship against 3 hungry patron challengers! Up first, straight out of Florida but ain’t no Florida man – Eddie Quintana! From Las Vegas, he’s ready to make a few gambles in order to win – Dylan Sumpter! And finally, from John’s home state of Georgia competing in the competition of the most desperate attempt to get the band back to Atlanta – Chris Everett! Check out the episode and the set lists and let us know who you think won this battle! We’ll be putting up a poll for vote later today, the winner will be crowned champion and will be back to compete in April!

Devo Series: “Gigaton Hopes”

A little extra episode since we haven’t had one in a few weeks. In this show we take all of the information out there about the Gigaton record and pick our Top 3 we’re most excited for based off of that. And we share some extra clips that just missed this week’s Budapest episode.

Evolution Series: #7 “Porch”

1-2-3-4, we’re back with our first Evolution episode of 2020! We’ve been promising this one for a while, and we’ve finally gotten around to doing Porch! We’ll talk about the early versions where the song was used as a platform on television for Ed to get his viewpoints out on being pro-choice, as well as of course the antics of Ed during the early days of Drop In The Park and Pinkpop, and before my co-host kills me, of course we play Atlanta 94. We’ll also talk about the transformation Porch went through in the modern era of the band where they went to an alternate, riffy intro. Thanks to Patron Brad Piasecki for joining me on this one!

Bridge School Series: #2 – October 1, 1994

We continue our series with the second ever Bridge School performance for the band in 94. Hear us break down the first live version of Daniel Johnston song Walking The Cow, an early version of Corduroy before the album was released, a rare appearance of Let Me Sleep and Jack Irons official tryout with the band. Thanks for subscribing and enjoy!

Devo Series: “Mock Fantasy Draft”

Hello all! This episode of Devo is for all of you who are participating in the fantasy league. John and I do a mock draft of how the first 3 rounds should normally go, what picks make sense where, and other dos and don’ts. For those of you who drafted already, we pick our early favorites in some of the leagues! That, and one or two extra clips from this week’s episode. Stay tuned until the end of the episode for a preview of what’s coming on next week’s show!

Devo Series: “Choosing a Covers Album”

Hey! time for some extra content! in this episode John and Randy create their own album track listings featuring their favorite covers that the band has performed in the past. Check out what they picked for their list and comment below on what some of your favorite covers to make your album are! Stay tuned until the end where we’ll have extra content from this week’s Sydney show that just missed the cut!

Devo Series: “Creating a Set List from Ten Songs”

Randy and John take 13 minutes of your time that you’ll never get back by arguing about the set lists they’ve created by using songs from Ten with one additional Ten-era option to select. There are no winners and losers, only participants!

Bridge School Series: #1 – November 1, 1992

This is our first episode in our year running Bridge School series and we’re starting right from the top in 1992. This was at the height of the band’s fame on a platform that they had strayed away from for some time – one that featured a relaxed, acoustic atmosphere. What started off a little slow grew from the passion within the show as Ed took center stage to steer the wheel. Bridge School shows are most known for their surprises and this show had no lack of them. This show introduced us to the first performances of Daughter and I Am A Patriot, which could possibly be the first time Eddie played guitar on stage as a member of Pearl Jam, and also a very rare rendition of Angel with Dave A on guitar. Check out this episode where we break down the 7-song set in one of the band’s most memorable eras.

Setlist Draft December 2019

Have you ever tried to create your dream Pearl Jam set list that you’d love to hear some day? Have you ever tried to create it while 3 of your friends are battling with you to come up with the perfect set list? Well we did that in this episode! Randy and John are joined by Patron Patrick Boegel and host of the Better Band Podcast Branden Palomo as they draft their ultimate Pearl Jam set. The rules are as follows – every pick is a choice for that spot in the setlist, so unlike in fantasy sports where you pick the top player #1 overall, here you are selecting your opener as your first pick, so on and so forth. Once a song is taken, its off the board (outside for one free pass pick) For 18 songs in the first set, 7 in Encore 1 and 5 in Encore, we do our best to get in our favorite songs and a set list that flows together and is something we crave to see live. This week on our social media pages you’ll be able to vote for your favorite setlist, the winning setlist will get to pick a charity where the fans can donate in order to get an opportunity to win an original vinyl press of No Code! Stay tuned for that!

Evolution Series: #6 “Wash”

Hello Patrons! In this episode we will break down the live history of Wash. From its early days of being a b-side and a regular opener, to becoming one of their more uncommon song performances…from Speed Wash to Bridge School, until delays so long without playing the song that Ed had to write the lyrics on a pizza box! We tackle the best versions of Wash throughout the next 50 minutes, a perfect episode for a rainy day!

Evolution Series: #5 “Corduroy”

Happy Patron’s day everyone! As a thank you to being a contributor to our show, we have a new Evolution episode out for your consumption today featuring one of Pearl Jam’s best songs Corduroy. John hooks up with patron Patrick Boegel to dive into Corduroy’s past and present, from the song’s identity developing with Jack Irons, the unique Bridge School versions, and the versions in current day where Ed brings in a call and response. Enjoy the episode! It’s Evolution BayBay!
